Abuja: The Ijaw National Congress (INC) Worldwide has asserted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is operating within its constitutional mandate regarding the Warri Ward delineation exercise. Prof. Benjamin Okaba, Global President of INC Worldwide, conveyed this stance during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. He addressed the demands for the cancellation of the ongoing delineation of Warri Federal Constituency, which were made by the Oodua Peoples' Congress (OPC).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Okaba emphasized that INEC's actions are driven by legal obligations, not discretionary decisions. He pointed out that the delineation exercise is mandated by the Supreme Court and aligns with the rules stipulated by the highest court in the land. Okaba clarified that the exercise is based on empirical data, population dynamics, administrative requirements, and national interest, dismissing any claims of bias towards the Ijaw nation.
Furthermore, Okaba refuted allegations of land seizure and highlighted the comprehensive process undertaken by INEC, which included consultations with community stakeholders to verify ownership and occupancy. He expressed disappointment at the OPC's appeal to INEC and President Bola Tinubu to halt the delineation, emphasizing that such issues are deeply rooted in local history and should not be influenced by external forces.
Okaba reiterated the INC's commitment to peaceful coexistence, dialogue, and constitutional methods for addressing tribal concerns. He urged all parties to avoid sensationalism and uphold due process. The INC stands firm in defending the interests and rights of the Ijaw people and cautions against any efforts to undermine their sovereignty.
He concluded by stressing that genuine peace requires equity, accountability, and respect for all parties involved, advocating for fairness and true recognition to achieve reconciliation in society.
