Johannesburg: The Nigerian community in South Africa has hailed the country's women national team, the Super Falcons, for winning the Women's Africa Cup of Nations title. The Super Falcons overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco 3-2, securing the title for the 10th time.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the community, under the auspices of the Nigeria Union South Africa (NUSA), released a statement on Sunday praising the team for displaying the typical Nigerian fighting spirit. The statement, signed by NUSA President Smart Nwobi, commended the Super Falcons for their composure, focus, and determination in clinching the victory. Nwobi, a lawyer, highlighted the difficulty of coming back from two goals down, especially against a home team.
Nwobi further expressed pride in the Super Falcons for achieving the "Mission X" feat and joined fellow Nigerians in celebrating their success. He also emphasized the need for immediate preparations to defend the title, noting the rising standards of women's football in Africa. Nwobi pointed out that future tournaments would present stronger opposition.
Additionally, NUSA extended congratulations to South Africa's Banyana Banyana for finishing fourth and winning the fair play trophy.
