Ilorin: Prof. Wahab Egbewole, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, has sought support for two strategic initiatives to establish a standard of excellence within the institution. The Vice-Chancellor made the appeal during the Award of Excellence and Investiture of Distinguished Alumni and Unilorin Ambassadors.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Egbewole, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, announced plans for legacy projects, including the Transcript Hub and Innovation Hub. He also emphasized the need for support for Techno and Industrial Park and the Centre for Stem Cell Research. The Ambassadors, nominated by their faculties, are recognized for their loyalty to Unilorin's values and their meaningful contributions.
Highlighting the contributions of notable alumni, Egbewole mentioned Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, a 1984 medical graduate, who sponsored 40 academic staff for international conferences and donated a Hilux vehicle and Anatomage machine. Another alumnus, Dr. Murthada Adeniji, contributed a 90 KVA Solar power system and a Hilux vehicle, significantly reducing the university's energy costs.
Prof. Abdulrasheed Adeoye, Chairman of the Planning Committee for Unilorin's 50th Anniversary Celebration, described the university as a brand that has evolved to compete internationally. He noted the awards given in three categories: Award of Excellence, Distinguished Alumni, and Unilorin Ambassadors. Upcoming awards will honor graduates from different years and faculties.
In his keynote address, Prof. Yusuf Ali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, emphasized the importance of the gathering as a celebration of generosity and a reflection on responsibility. Speaking on the theme 'The Essence of Giving Back to the University: A Charge to do More', Ali highlighted the significance of donations, material contributions, and building legacies, recognizing the sacrifices of past generations and the responsibility to contribute to future ones.
