Tinubu Rehabilitated CCD Director After Sierra Leone Rebels Amputated His Hands

Enugu: The Executive Director of the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), Mr. David Anyaele, has detailed how President Bola Tinubu played a crucial role in his rehabilitation after Sierra Leone rebels amputated his hands in 1999. Anyaele shared his experience during the Nkata Umuibe, a monthly speakers' series organized by the Centre for Memories (CFM) in Enugu, focusing on the theme 'Onye Aghana Nwanne Ya'.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Anyaele recounted that the assailants were fighters of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), who were active during the Sierra Leone civil war from 1991 to 2002. After his ordeal was broadcasted, Anyaele reached out to various governments, including Southeast governors, seeking assistance but faced rejection. He then appealed to then Lagos governor Bola Tinubu, who responded by ordering medical assessments for Anyaele.

The medical evaluations recommended treatment abroad, which facilitated Anyaele's rehabilitation in Germany, where he received artificial hands. Expressing gratitude, Anyaele acknowledged the Tinubu administration and the people of Lagos State for their support. He also highlighted the discrimination and neglect often faced by individuals with disabilities in Igboland.

Anyaele narrated that his business trip to Freetown turned tragic when he was attacked because of his Nigerian nationality. Despite his pleas, the rebels ignored him, reflecting the harsh realities many Nigerians encountered during the conflict. He credited Nigerian-led ECOMOG troops for rescuing him and providing essential medical care that saved his life.

This traumatic experience, Anyaele explained, abruptly introduced him to the disability community, leaving him uncertain about his future. He spoke about the stigma, discrimination, and isolation he faced as a person with a disability. Anyaele called on Igbos to reject discrimination against persons with disabilities and promote inclusivity, emphasizing that disability can affect anyone at any time.

He praised Governor Alex Otti for establishing the Abia State Disability Commission and encouraged Governor Peter Mbah to implement a similar initiative in Enugu State.
