Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has called on Plateau residents to be peaceful and unite for the progress and growth of the nation. Tinubu made the call while speaking at the Funeral Service of Nana Lydia Yilwatda on Saturday in Jos.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the deceased was the mother of Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Tinubu urged Plateau residents and Nigerians in general to overlook religious and ethnic differences. He shared his personal experience of religious harmony within his family, emphasizing the importance of freedom of religion and the shared accountability to a higher power.
In his address, Tinubu stated, "I inherited Islam from my family, I didn't change; but my wife is a pastor and she prays for me at all times. I have never convinced or converted her; I believe in the freedom of religion. We are praying and answerable to the same Almighty God. We will account to Him of our deeds and character. So, our love to others is what matters; we must learn to live together as one people."
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau expressed gratitude to the president for attending the funeral despite his busy schedule. The governor identified insecurity as a major obstacle to the state's development and highlighted his administration's efforts to promote peaceful coexistence in Plateau. He also extended his thanks to the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for her support of displaced and vulnerable women and children in the state.
Earlier, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the chief mourner, paid tribute to his mother, describing her as a dedicated and loving wife who led a life of service to humanity. Yilwatda shared that his mother was known for her loyalty, determination, and humility, often sharing whatever she had with neighbors.
The APC National Chairman expressed gratitude to the president, governors, members of the national assembly, the government of Plateau, and all Nigerians for their support during his family's time of grief. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the deceased, aged 83, will be interred in Dungung, Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau.
