Abuja: The Senate has passed a bill aimed at establishing the Federal Oil and Gas Hospital in Benikrukru, Delta. This development marks a significant step towards improving healthcare services for oil and gas workers and communities affected by exploration activities in the region.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the bill was presented by the Senate Committee on Health, led by Sen. Banigo Ipalibo Harry (PDP-Rivers). The initiative, sponsored by Sen. Joel Thomas (APC-Delta), seeks to address the healthcare needs of those impacted by the oil and gas industry. During the presentation, Harry emphasized the importance of establishing a facility dedicated to providing comprehensive medical care for workers and nearby communities.
Harry outlined that stakeholders expressed strong support for the bill during a public hearing. She highlighted the numerous hazards faced by oil and gas workers and host communities, including exposure to terminal illnesses, cancer, and injuries that require specialized medical attention and occupational health services. The neglect of these needs has contributed to unrest in the Niger Delta, posing a challenge to national development.
Delta State has been selected as the hospital's location due to its extensive oil exploration activities. The proposed hospital is expected to offer essential medical services, ensuring that workers and host communities have access to quality healthcare, emergency services, and occupational health. The establishment aims to reduce treatment delays and improve response times for medical emergencies.
Harry urged her colleagues in the Senate to pass the bill, citing its importance for public health and regional stability. Following a detailed clause-by-clause review, the Senate successfully passed the bill, paving the way for the hospital's establishment.
