Owerri: The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), also known as Pyrates Confraternity, provided free medical services to at least 800 residents of Orogwe Community in the Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo. This initiative, held at the Primary Healthcare Centre in Orogwe, was part of the association's '49th Konverge' activities in Owerri. According to News Agency of Nigeria, the medical mission offered diagnosis, treatment, and essential medications to the residents, aiming to support individuals who struggle to access healthcare due to financial constraints. Dr. Joseph Oteri, the group's National President, emphasized that the mission was part of NAS's quarterly efforts to assist communities, particularly focusing on non-communicable diseases. The association, formed in 1952, has evolved into an advocate for social causes, providing free medical care to communities in need. During the event, children and other patients received medical attention, with some requiring further medical interventions bei ng referred to the Federal Medical Center in Owerri. The association also committed to funding hospital bills for surgeries where necessary. Chief Bart Akelemor, NAS's Chief Programme Officer, highlighted the role of the medical mission in supporting the state's healthcare sector, noting the involvement of 41 doctors both locally and internationally. Beneficiaries of the programme expressed gratitude for the services rendered, particularly in light of financial challenges preventing access to medical care. In addition to the medical mission, NAS launched an arts exhibition titled 'Art Ova Yap' to promote good governance, security, and poverty reduction. The exhibition showcased artworks from within the group, serving as a platform for social advocacy and dialogue. Dr. Oteri emphasized the association's commitment to using art as a tool for positive societal change and encouraged public support for the initiative. Proceeds from the exhibition will support families of deceased NAS members, with plans to esta blish an annual residency for mentoring postgraduate artists. The exhibition was dedicated to Olugbohun Ajayi, a recently deceased member, and was praised for its powerful expression of creativity and advocacy for positive societal change.
