Abeokuta: The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has urged the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) to intensify efforts in fostering sports development in the country. Olopade made this call in Abeokuta following a novelty match organized by SWAN for media professionals at the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival (NSF), known as the Gateway Games.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the entertaining game at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena featured Northern sports journalists competing against their Southern counterparts. The symbolic football game aimed to promote unity and highlight the significant role of sports journalism in national development. Olopade participated by playing for both teams, showcasing unity and camaraderie. The Northern team emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, scoring a well-coordinated goal in the second half.
Olopade expressed his delight in participating in what he described as a 'very competitive' match. He emphasized the spirit of unity and togetherness witnessed among participants. He took the opportunity to encourage sports journalists to focus on events like the NSF and contribute to sports development narratives in Nigeria.
Olopade reiterated, 'Sports is life. It should not be relegated to the back pages or the end of news bulletins.
