Abuja: The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) has announced its ambitious plan to raise N100 billion over the next five years to support cancer survivors and advance cancer research in Nigeria. This initiative was revealed by the President of the society, Prof. Abidemi Omonisi, in celebration of National Cancer Survivors' Day.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the NCS has received approval from its National Executive Council (NEC) to establish the NCS National Cancer Intervention Fund (NCS-NCIF), which is set to launch in July. The fund will be overseen by an independent governing council, with leadership from Dr Gafar Alawode, a global health financial expert. The council will also include Dr Uchechukwu Nwokwu, the Coordinator of the National Cancer Control Programme, serving as Vice-Chairman, and two cancer survivors, Ms Tinu Lawal and Ms Chioma Ikejiani, representing the interests of survivors.
Prof. Omonisi emphasized the importance of National Cancer Survivors' Day, observed globally on June 1, as a time to honor cancer survivors, connect with them, and evaluate survivorship programs. He expressed his admiration for all cancer survivors in Nigeria, acknowledging the courage of survivors and their families, and highlighting their crucial role in oncology.
To further integrate survivors into its framework, the NCS has initiated the Nigerian Coalition for Cancer Survivors (NCCS), aimed at amplifying the voice of cancer survivors nationwide. Additionally, the society plans to introduce the 'Employ Cancer Survivors' initiative to address unemployment challenges faced by survivors.
Prof. Omonisi reiterated the society's dedication to addressing survivor-related issues, noting ongoing discussions with the Federal Government regarding the high costs and scarcity of essential cancer medications in the country. He also mentioned the society's collaboration with NICRAT on the National Cancer Health Fund (NCHF), expressing gratitude to the Director-General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment for his efforts in ensuring timely fund disbursement to beneficiaries.
The News Agency of Nigeria highlights that National Cancer Survivors Day is dedicated to celebrating the resilience and achievements of cancer survivors, raising awareness about survivorship, supporting essential cancer services, and fostering a sense of community among survivors, their families, and caregivers.
