Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has highlighted the vision of Nigeria's founding fathers, who foresaw the nation as a leading force among the global black community due to its significant human and material resources.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, President Tinubu expressed these sentiments during a televised speech commemorating Nigeria's 65th Independence Anniversary. He paid homage to prominent national figures including Herbert Macaulay, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Additional icons acknowledged for their contributions were Sir Ahmadu Bello, Margaret Ekpo, Anthony Enahoro, Ladoke Akintola, Michael Okpara, Aminu Kano, and Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.
President Tinubu remarked on the historical journey from October 1, 1960, when Nigeria gained self-governance from colonial rule, emphasizing the enduring dream of its founders for a strong and united nation to lead Africa and inspire the world. He noted the belief held by Nigeria's pioneers that the country was destined to lead the black race as the largest black nation.
Reflecting on Nigeria's post-independence trajectory, Tinubu acknowledged persistent social, political, and economic challenges. He pointed out that while Nigeria has not yet realized all the aspirations of its forebearers, the nation remains aligned with their vision. Over the past 65 years, Nigeria has achieved notable progress in economic development and national unity.
The President underscored advancements in education and healthcare, emphasizing the increased access to these services compared to 1960. He cited the expansion from 120 secondary schools to over 23,000 by 2024, and the growth from two tertiary institutions to a total of 693 universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education by the end of the previous year.
Acknowledging Nigeria's tumultuous past, Tinubu commended the nation's resilience through various trials, including a civil war, military regimes, and political upheavals. He praised the collective courage and determination that have enabled Nigeria to overcome these challenges.
