Lagos: The Lagos State University (LASU) has called on Nigerians to embrace unity, urging them to live peacefully with one another. Prof. Mubashiru Mohammed, Director of the Centre for General Nigerian Studies (CGNS) at LASU, made the call while speaking at a program to celebrate Nigeria's 65th Independence Day anniversary.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the program was organized by the institution to also celebrate its 4th GNS Day and the 4th anniversary of the Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, in office. NAN reports that the theme of the program is 'Ethnic Diversity in Nigeria, Emotional Intelligence To The Rescue.'
Prof. Mohammed emphasized the importance of commitment, excellence, and unity, highlighting that the GNS has consistently showcased the ethos, values, and cultures that bind Nigerians together. He pointed out that Nigeria, with over 250 ethnic groups, is a nation rich in diversity, and this diversity should be managed properly to avoid tension.
He added that the university took pride in spotlighting the rich heritage of the five divisions of Lagos State: Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe, alongside cultural representations from other states. This promotes unity in diversity, aligning with the theme of the program. Mohammed stressed the need to leverage emotional intelligence, empathy, understanding, self-awareness, and effective communication to navigate society and build lasting peace.
Speaking on the origins of GNS Day, Mohammed noted that it was first inaugurated under the leadership of his predecessor, Prof. Simiat Elias. He acknowledged the growth and recognition the CGNS has enjoyed under the current leadership, attributing it to greater institutional support and student engagement.
The VC, Prof. Olatunji-Bello, addressed the significance of the theme, reflecting on Nigeria's diverse cultures, histories, and values. She emphasized that despite ethnic differences, Nigerians share a common destiny. Emotional intelligence is crucial for fostering respect, empathy, and cooperation among different ethnic backgrounds.
She expressed hope that the cultural displays and artistic expressions put together by the university's students would help preserve cultural values amidst modernisation. The event featured cultural displays by Yoruba and Igbo members of LASU staff school.
Mr. Kaoli Olusanya, the Special Guest of Honour, received an award of recognition from the CGNS. Prof. Mohammed also mentioned that previous directors and exceptional students were honored during the 2nd GNS Day in October 2023, and this year, resource persons and CGNS Board members were recognized for their contributions.
The VC was honored with the prestigious award of Grand Commander of the CGNS, acknowledging her support to the center and her leadership in the university. Prof. Mohammed appreciated the VC as she marked her 4th year in office, acknowledging her remarkable achievements and support for the CGNS.
