NEMA Distributes Relief Items to Fire Victims in Ogoja and Ikom

Ogoja: The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed food and other items to victims of market fire incidents in Ikom and Ogoja, located in Cross River. The recent fires, which occurred four days apart, resulted in the destruction of properties and goods worth millions of naira.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the Director General of NEMA, through her representative Mrs. Mmandu Aisueni, Head of Operations in Uyo, facilitated the distribution of relief items to the affected Local Government Areas. Umar expressed sympathy for the victims and their families, emphasizing that the relief items were intended to alleviate the impact of the incidents. She highlighted the fortunate fact that no lives were lost despite the extensive damage to shops and goods.

During the distribution, Umar stated, "At this critical time, we sincerely do understand your pains and frustration as a result of the fire incidents, let's all endeavour to keep hope alive while we are still alive." She acknowledged that the relief items were a temporary measure and not a replacement for the losses suffered.

Mr. Antigha Gil, Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), commended NEMA for their timely support. He mentioned that the state government had reached out to NEMA immediately after assessing the damage in the Ikom and Ogoja markets. Gil assured that the distribution was conducted smoothly and in the presence of security agencies.

Some victims, including Nnamdi Okonkwo and John Dickson, expressed gratitude to both NEMA and SEMA for the assistance provided. According to NAN, the relief items included 300 bags of rice, garri, tomato paste, and seasoning, all aimed at supporting the victims in rebuilding their lives.
