Benue: The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has made a significant contribution of N1 billion and other relief materials to victims of violence in Benue through her organization, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). Mrs Tinubu addressed the residents of Benue on Tuesday in Makurdi, expressing her condolences, particularly to those who have lost family members and properties in the recent attacks.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the First Lady emphasized the purpose of her visit was to offer support to the Benue State Governor, Rev. Father Hyacinth Alia, and the citizens of the state amidst the recent violence. She voiced her distress over the killings, particularly in Yelwata and Dauda Communities, which have resulted in significant loss of life and destruction of property. Mrs Tinubu lamented that communities previously known for peace are now plagued by violence, urging an end to the conflict.
She further highlighted the contribution of Benue State to Nigeria's growth, particularly in food security, noting its reputation as the nation's food basket. As a mother, she appealed for reconciliation and peaceful coexistence, suggesting dialogue and patience as solutions to disagreements. Mrs Tinubu stated that the N1 billion donation aims to support displaced families in rebuilding their lives.
The First Lady also called on traditional, religious, and other prominent leaders in Benue to collaborate with the government in restoring peace. In response, Governor Alia expressed gratitude for Mrs Tinubu's intervention, acknowledging her consistent support and love for the people of Benue. He praised her efforts, particularly those directed at women across the country.
