Minister Urges Media to Keep Nation United

Abuja: The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has called on media practitioners to maintain national unity while fulfilling their constitutional duty of holding government accountable. Idris made this appeal during his remarks at the Blueprint Public Lecture, Impact Series, and Award event held in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event, themed 'Exploring the Potentials of Livestock Exports,' was organized by the management of Blueprint Newspapers Ltd. The minister emphasized the media's significant responsibility in discerning what information should be disseminated to avoid societal harm. He reiterated the media's role in nurturing democracy, describing it as the fourth estate of the realm.

Idris also highlighted President Bola Tinubu's support for the media, noting that the administration fosters a flourishing media environment. He assured that the President has tasked him with professionally executing his duties, recognizing the media's critical role in nation-building.

Malam Salisu Umar, Managing Director of Blueprint Newspapers, explained that the theme was chosen to address national priorities such as economic diversification, rural revitalization, and food security. He praised the founding chairman's perseverance, which has sustained the publication despite challenges.

Alhaji Idi Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, expressed optimism about the livestock sector's potential to contribute significantly to Nigeria's GDP and the global export market. He cited the country's vast livestock resources as a reason for celebration.

Prof. Attahiru Jega, the Keynote Speaker, noted that the livestock sector contributes an estimated seven to nine percent of agricultural GDP and provides livelihoods for over 20 million Nigerians. Meanwhile, Hajiya Imaam Suleiman-Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs, announced plans to collaborate on a Livestock Reform Programme for Women to empower them.

Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, emphasized the livestock sector's importance to the economy and commended the establishment of a dedicated ministry for its development. The event was attended by officials from various governmental and industry sectors, who witnessed the presentation of awards to distinguished figures in governance, media, and humanitarian efforts.
