Oron: Sen. Wasiu Eshinlokun, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, has emphasized the significance of the Maritime Sector as a crucial asset for economic development and employment generation. During a recent oversight visit to the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) in Oron, Akwa Ibom, Eshinlokun highlighted the sector's role as a catalyst for innovation, employment, and national prosperity.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the committee's visit aimed to evaluate the academy's infrastructure and its suitability for maritime education. Eshinlokun recognized the achievements made by the Maritime Academy and acknowledged the challenges it faces. He expressed the committee's commitment to collaborating in shaping the future of maritime education in Nigeria.
Commending the Acting Rector, Dr. Kevin Okonna, for maintaining high standards of infrastructure, Eshinlokun described the facilities as a strategic national asset with international standards. He emphasized that the institution serves as a strategic asset for Nigeria's economic and maritime development, beyond being a mere citadel of learning.
Eshinlokun assured that the National Assembly is committed to supporting the academy's efforts through legislative measures and ongoing engagement. Addressing the cadets and management staff, he praised the academy's state-of-the-art simulators and urged cadets to remain dedicated to their training, as they represent the future leaders in maritime sectors.
The lawmaker pointed out that Nigeria is on its way to becoming a maritime hub, propelled by President Bola Tinubu's commitment to investing in the Marine and Blue Economy. He expressed admiration for the academy's completed and ongoing projects, noting the advanced infrastructure and evolving excellence.
During the visit, Acting Rector Okonna expressed gratitude to the senate committee for their visit-the first in eight years-and for ensuring that appropriations were directed to enhance maritime education. He also thanked President Tinubu for his dedication to developing the country's maritime sector.
