Lagos State to Launch Rail Academy for Building Human Capacity in Transport Sector

Lagos: The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a rail academy aimed at enhancing human capacity in the transport sector. Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, shared this development during a panel session at the second Lagos Traffic Conference in Lagos.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the panel session was part of the celebrations marking the Silver Jubilee of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). The anniversary's theme was 'Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads: Challenges, Opportunities and Innovations.' Dr. Hamzat explained that the rail academy will serve as a training ground for Nigerians, ultimately reducing the need for imports in the sector and fostering human capital development.

Dr. Hamzat further stated that Lagos is positioning itself as a global human capital center, a goal aligned with the state's 30-year development plan. He also highlighted LASTMA's progress over the years, particularly its adoption of technology to improve operational efficiency and reduce the need for vehicle pursuits.

The Deputy Governor called on Lagos residents to support LASTMA and view them as partners in maintaining road order. He emphasized that the absence of LASTMA for even a week could lead to chaos on Lagos roads.

During the conference, Mr. Ayo Olowookere, CEO of Imperial Homes Mortgage Bank, discussed the importance of private sector involvement in LASTMA's activities. He noted that the private sector is keen on seeing strategic planning and consistency, which could present opportunities, such as the use of drones.

Additionally, Mr. Babajide Otitoju, a senior journalist with Television Continental News, remarked that some of the criticisms directed at LASTMA should instead be aimed at the government. He stressed the need for road infrastructure development to facilitate vehicle and commuter movement, as well as ongoing community engagement to enhance LASTMA's public perception.
