Lagos: The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Mr. Jubril Emilagba, has urged residents and developers to comply with approved building regulations and remain vigilant against unsafe construction practices. Emilagba gave the advice during his visit to the site of a building collapse on Cole St., Ebute-Metta East, Lagos Mainland.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the affected building is a two-storey structure located at No. 54 Cole St., in the Ebute Metta East, Oyingbo area of Lagos. Emilagba highlighted poor compliance with safety standards and disregard for approved building plans as major causes of recurring building collapses in the state. He emphasized that developers must follow due process before erecting any structure and stated that no life should be lost due to negligence in following building regulations.
The chairman assured that his administration would continue to collaborate with state agencies to monitor construction activities, ensuring that only safe and approved structures are erected within the local government area. He also praised emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the police, for their prompt response to the incident.
Emilagba expressed his sympathy to the affected residents and promised that the council would assist them within available resources. He emphasized the council's commitment to supporting the victims while taking stronger measures to prevent unsafe building practices in the future.
NAN also reports that the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, provided a situation update, revealing that one person was found dead, while survivors rescued alive have now increased to 26.
