Labour Party Rejects Coalition, Establishes Disciplinary Committee to Address Internal Discontent

Abuja: The Labour Party (LP) has announced its decision not to partake in any coalition or alliance in preparation for the 2027 general elections. This resolution emerged from the party's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where a 12-point communiqu© was adopted.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Julius Abure, articulated the party's stance, emphasizing a focus on internal development over external partnerships. Abure stated that the Labour Party aims to rebuild, reposition, re-strategize, reconcile, and expand its membership base to secure victory in the upcoming 2027 elections. He voiced doubts regarding current coalition talks, criticizing the lack of leadership and organizational unity among those promoting such initiatives.

Additionally, the NEC reviewed actions by Governor Alex Otti of Abia and other party members, which were deemed contrary to party interests. In response, a disciplinary committee was established to investigate these activities and provide recommendations within two weeks. This action follows Otti's statements on national television, which allegedly disparaged the Labour Party.

The disciplinary committee will be chaired by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, with Alhaji Umar Farouk serving as Secretary. Other committee members include Mr. Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Mr. Callistus Ihejiagwa.

In another development, the NEC confirmed Chief George Moghalu as the party's candidate for the Anambra 2025 governorship election, following primaries held on April 5 in Awka. Abure urged party members and the Anambra community to support Moghalu in the November 8 election, emphasizing the party's commitment to a robust candidate selection process. Responding to concerns about Moghalu's recent shift from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abure reassured that the Labour Party is now employing more structured methods for candidate evaluation to uphold party values and avoid internal conflicts.
