Ex-Commandos Harp on Sports to Foster Unity, Support Community

Abuja: The old students of Command Secondary School, Kaduna, Abuja Chapter, otherwise known as ex-commandos, have harped on sports to foster unity and support community. The students stated this at their maiden inter-house sports competition in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event was organised to foster unity among members, promote healthy living, encourage networking, and give back to the military environment from which they emerged. The event featured a colourful march past by the four traditional school houses: Tiger House, Octopus/Rhino House, Dragon House, and Flying Horse House.

Speaking to newsmen at the event, the Special Guest of Honour, retired Maj.-Gen. Ayuba Haman, said the initiative was born out of efforts to bring old students together and encourage inter-generational bonding. Haman highlighted the importance of the event as an opportunity for alumni from various graduating years, spanning from 1984 to 2025, to connect and strengthen ties.

Haman emphasized the role of sports as a unifying factor in society, noting its potential to positively engage youth and reduce negative habits. He cited examples from countries like Australia, Brazil, and Mexico, where sports have been pivotal in youth development. Haman also referenced the Super Falcons as an illustration of sports bringing national pride.

Chairman of the Abuja Chapter, Mr. Aaron Ogar, discussed the event's purpose in bridging the gap between millennial and older alumni. Ogar stressed the potential of sports to engage youth productively and urged government initiatives to focus on youth-oriented sporting events to foster unity and reduce insecurity.

Former student Mrs. Nguumbur Oritsejafor shared her positive experience of participating in the event, noting its benefits for health and competitiveness. Ms. Gumni Mallim, a member of the planning committee, remarked on the choice of sports as a means to promote fitness and honour their military roots.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event concluded with camaraderie and a commitment to future gatherings across other chapters.
