Benin City: The Director-General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency, Dr. Loretta Ogboro-Okor, has revealed that Edo State contributes an estimated 31 percent of Nigeria's total diaspora remittances, marking it as a significant contributor to the country's economic development.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, in a telephone interview, Ogboro-Okor noted that of the estimated 17 million Nigerians living abroad, a substantial number are from Edo State. She highlighted that since 2017, when the World Bank reported $22 billion in total remittances to Nigeria, $6 billion originated from Edo. By 2024, remittances rose to $24 billion, with Edo's share projected at $7 billion, representing 31 percent of the national total.
Ogboro-Okor attributed this achievement to the resilience and competitive spirit of Edo citizens, rooted in the state's family and community values. She emphasized that the remittances are transforming lives, uplifting families, and driving development in communities across the state.
Further, Ogboro-Okor mentioned the agency's ongoing outreach efforts, which include harmonization and awareness campaigns in cities like Rome, Verona, and Napoli. These initiatives aim to engage the Edo diaspora more effectively and strengthen ties. She praised Edo citizens in Italy for their consistent remittances, which not only bolster the state's economy but also enhance Nigeria's global image.
Governor Monday Okpebholo expressed pride in the diaspora's contributions and remains committed to collaborating with them to enhance their welfare and expand their impact. Ogboro-Okor called on Edo indigenes and their partners abroad to continue supporting development initiatives, reaffirming that citizen welfare remains a top priority for the current administration.
