Don’t Be Afraid to Take Hard Decisions, UNILAG VC Tells Female Leaders

Lagos: The Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, has advised women in leadership positions not to be afraid of taking hard decisions when the need arises.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ogunsola emphasized that courage, competence, fairness, empathy, and transparency are critical qualities that distinguish any leader. She noted that leadership involves service to humanity, which requires facing situations with an open mind. As the first female Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Ogunsola encouraged women to be inclusive and pragmatic in leadership roles while adhering strictly to rules. She warned that bending rules to satisfy private interests could have severe consequences, highlighting the importance of serving a larger group rather than a small, select few.

Ogunsola addressed the misconception that female leaders need to be shielded, stating that they are sometimes underestimated. She emphasized that there is no gender in leadership roles and that issues should be dealt with directly. She also shared her approach during her two and a half years of administration at UNILAG, where she has remained true to herself and strived for fairness.

She described her role as challenging, acknowledging the pressure associated with public office. Ogunsola stressed the importance of maintaining flexibility while being conscious of boundaries. She urged that competence be prioritized to achieve excellence, outlining criteria for opportunities that are open to all, regardless of personal connections.

Ogunsola, who became UNILAG's first female Vice Chancellor after 60 years, revealed that she never initially aspired to the position. She encouraged capable women to consider leadership roles, as they can significantly contribute to societal advancement.
