COREN Seeks Collaboration to Address Engineering Non-Compliance in Nigeria

Abuja: The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has called for collaboration between states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to tackle the issue of non-compliance with engineering standards, which has resulted in engineering failures across the nation. COREN President, Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, emphasized this need during the 33rd COREN Engineering Assembly held in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the assembly's theme, 'Advancing Quality Engineering Services and Businesses in Nigeria-Professional Compliance and Remuneration,' highlighted the importance of professionalism, compliance, and fair remuneration in delivering quality engineering services. Prof. Abubakar stated that COREN, as a regulatory body, is tasked with overseeing engineering education, training, and practice in Nigeria.

Prof. Abubakar stressed the significance of collaboration to ensure engineering projects adhere to established codes and standards. He noted that COREN has initiated Technical Committees (STCs) and Expatriate Monitoring Committees (EMCs) in 22 states to oversee and regulate engineering practices. The goal is to extend these efforts to all 36 states and the FCT by the end of 2026. He urged state governments and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to support COREN's initiatives to curb non-compliance and prevent engineering failures that result in loss of lives and property.

COREN Registrar, Prof. Okorie Uche, highlighted the assembly as a crucial platform for Nigeria's engineering community to engage in reflection and forward thinking. He emphasized that the theme addresses urgent issues related to maintaining quality standards in engineering services both locally and globally. Uche called for collective action from engineers to tackle challenges such as non-compliance and quackery in the profession.

Prof. Barth Nnaji, Chairman of the occasion and Chief Executive of Geometric Power Group, encouraged engineers to partner with the government to ensure Nigeria stays competitive in global technological advancements. He urged the engineering community to embrace continuous learning and adapt emerging technologies to suit local needs, advocating for Nigerian solutions to Nigerian challenges.
