Lagos: The Chinese community in Lagos donated food and household items worth N5 million to 10 low-income families, commemorating the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the donation, which also marked the Mid-Autumn Festival and Nigeria's 65th Independence Anniversary, was coordinated by the Chinese Consulate in Lagos. The event was in collaboration with the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Association and the Association of Chinese Women in Nigeria.
Beneficiaries received essential items including rice, noodles, semovita, cassava flour, spaghetti, groundnut oil, toiletries, and other household essentials. The Chinese Consul General in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, highlighted that the gesture symbolized China's solidarity with Nigerians and underscored an ongoing commitment to supporting local communities.
Yuqing stated that this initiative is part of a charity programme called 'Together Fight Against Hunger', aimed at supporting indigent families and strengthening social ties between China and Nigeria. She emphasized the initiative's success in supporting over 300 families to date, providing not just food but also hope and dignity.
The Chairman of the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Association, Dr. Eric Ni, expressed that the group is committed to giving back to Nigerian society through various initiatives. He mentioned that the group has supported over 300 families and more than 5,000 students through scholarships.
Dr. Ni noted that hunger and poverty are global challenges requiring collective effort, and assured that the Chinese community in Nigeria would continue to align with government efforts in alleviating hardship and promoting inclusive growth.
Mrs. Loi Eng-Koon, Adviser to the Association of Chinese Women in Nigeria, explained that the gesture was also an expression of gratitude to Nigerians for their friendship and cooperation with Chinese residents. She emphasized the importance of building bridges between cultures and expressed appreciation for the warm reception by the Nigerian community.
Mr. Babatunde Kolawole, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked the Chinese community for their timely support amidst the high cost of living and rising inflation in the country. He expressed deep gratitude for the much-needed assistance provided by the donation.
The event also served as a cultural exchange platform, featuring brief remarks on the significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is a celebration of family unity and gratitude in China.
