China to Establish Africa’s First Insulin Production Facility in Nigeria

Abuja: The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has announced plans for the construction of Africa's first local insulin production facility in Nigeria. This development, unveiled during a reception in Abuja celebrating the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, aims to revolutionize blood glucose management in the region while reducing reliance on imported insulin. According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ambassador Yu highlighted that Chinese companies are in discussions with Nigeria to establish this insulin production plant, which would position Nigeria as a hub for African medical biotechnology. This project is touted as a milestone in China-Nigeria cooperation, joining the ranks of impactful initiatives such as the recently completed Abuja Water Supply Project, which now provides clean water to nearly three million people. Ambassador Yu emphasized China's commitment to supporting Africa's integration and self-driven development, underscoring the equal, pragmatic, and effi cient cooperation model between China and Africa. He also noted the shared symbolism of both countries celebrating their national days on October 1, a connection that strengthens the bond between their peoples. Celebrating individual achievements, Ambassador Yu mentioned Ms. Issah Fatimah Abiola, the first Nigerian female train driver trained by CCECC, who received China's 'Friendship Envoy Award.' Her story serves as an inspiration for many Nigerian women and symbolizes the enduring China-Nigeria friendship. The ambassador also praised Ibrahim Ismail, a young student fluent in Mandarin, as an exemplar of cultural exchange. In addition, Yu commended Nigeria's decision to include the Chinese language in the senior secondary school curriculum, viewing it as a crucial step in deepening bilateral ties. Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate, conveyed greetings from President Bola Tinubu and praised China's transformation journey and its role in strengthening bilateral relations. Represented by Se nator Babangida Hussaini, Jibrin emphasized Nigeria's commitment to bolstering cooperation with China across various critical sectors. The senator highlighted the comprehensive strategic partnership between Nigeria and China, evidenced by tangible outcomes in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, education, defence, trade, and investment. He assured that Nigerian legislators are dedicated to fostering an environment conducive to transparent and sustainable partnerships for the benefit of future generations.
