Busia: At least 10 students from various universities in Busia County have been awarded full scholarships to cover their tuition fees, thanks to a collaboration between the Kenya Community Development Foundation and Dhamira Moja CBO. The scholarships aim to support bright but needy students, enabling them to pursue their academic dreams without financial barriers.
According to Kenya News Agency, Sarah Martha, Executive Director of Dhamira Moja CBO, emphasized the importance of the initiative during the scholarship distribution event in Busia town. She stated that the scholarships, each worth Sh65,000, are intended to assist students attending tertiary institutions. Martha also highlighted plans for a program that will provide additional financial support for the students' upkeep while they are in school.
Martha underscored the impact of poverty on educational opportunities, noting that the scholarships offer a second chance for students who have been unable to continue their studies due to financial constraints. Beyond education, the program will also connect beneficiaries with job opportunities, internships, and skill development workshops, ensuring a holistic approach to their development.
The scholarships will be renewed annually based on the students' performance and discipline. Martha also mentioned the organization's long-term commitment to education, having supported high school students since 2009 and sponsoring teen mothers to acquire technical skills at vocational centers in the county.
Parents of the scholarship recipients expressed their gratitude for the financial relief. Gabriel Makokha, whose child attends the University of Nairobi, shared how the scholarship alleviates the challenge of paying fees, which has previously prevented his child from taking exams. Similarly, Juliet Wamalwa, another parent, encouraged the beneficiaries to work hard and excel in their studies.
Students like Jordan Masinde from Tom Mboya University and Jemimah Amoit from Alupe University expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to focus on their academics without the burden of financial worries. They encouraged others facing similar challenges to apply for such scholarships to advance their education.
