Gboko: Residents of Mbayion Community and surrounding areas in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue, have commended Gov. Hyacinth Alia for embarking on flood relief projects in the area.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the community members gave the commendation during an inspection tour of projects executed by the Governor, to mark his administration's two years in office. The tour was led by a former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku and a former Director-General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr Mike Omeri.
The community members described the road and bridge projects in the area as major relief from years of flooding and poor infrastructure that had left them isolated, especially during the rainy season. Dr Emmanuel Kor, a community leader, recounted the difficulties faced by residents before the intervention, highlighting the challenges of crossing flood-prone areas, which had previously trapped students, worshippers, and children.
Kor also appealed to the government to consider extending the drainage system to further mitigate flooding in the area. Similarly, Rev. Fr. Inenger Emmanuel of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tsaradi, praised the state government for addressing the community's longstanding needs, recounting a personal conversation with the governor that led to the project's initiation.
Mrs Christina Moji, a resident, expressed appreciation for the government's response after years of neglect, noting the community's renewed vibrancy. Shakwa-anwando Happiness, Head Girl of Global Academy School, emphasized the project's impact on education access for pupils and students.
Mrs Hembadoon Nongo, Acting Director of Engineering Services in the Office of the Governor, provided technical details of the project, noting that the bridge and culverts had previously isolated the community. She mentioned ongoing road clearing and asphalt overlay, stating that the completed project would boost economic and social activities in the area. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
