Kaduna: The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, has urged politicians from Nigeria's Northern Region to hold off on contesting for the presidency until 2031. This appeal came during his remarks at a two-day Interactive Session on Government-citizens' Engagement held in Kaduna.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the session, themed 'Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-citizens' Engagement for National Unity', was organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation. Akume commended the foundation for creating a platform that facilitates dialogue between citizens and government, aimed at enhancing governance, democracy, and development.
Akume highlighted the achievements of President Bola Tinubu's administration, which has been in power for two years and two months. He noted Tinubu's commitment to impartial governance and praised the administration's efforts in strengthening national security, revitalizing agriculture, and improving infrastructure. Akume emphasized the importance of supporting a leader who is making progress, warning against joining groups that could hinder such developments.
He also addressed the removal of fuel subsidies, which he claimed has provided more funds for sub-national governments to undertake significant projects. Akume elaborated on Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, asserting it is more than a slogan and represents a commitment to restoring hope across all regions of Nigeria.
The SGF outlined various achievements, including advancements in diplomacy, transportation, job creation, education, and national security. He refuted claims that the Northern Region is being marginalized, citing infrastructure projects like the Super Highway from Sokoto to Bagary.
Akume concluded by urging Northern politicians to set aside presidential ambitions until 2031, as he believes Tinubu's continued leadership will benefit the nation. He encouraged focusing on the progress already made rather than the next election cycle.
The session gathered appointees from the Tinubu administration and citizens from the Northern region, including Malam Ali M. Ali, Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria.
