Agbese Seeks Gender Equality Honour for Speaker Abbas

Pretoria: The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Rep. Philip Agbese, has called on the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) to declare the Speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Dr Tajudeen Abbas, as Africa's Champion for Gender Equality. Agbese made this appeal during a telephone interview with newsmen, following a high-level retreat of the PAP Committee on Gender, Family, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities in Pretoria, South Africa.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Agbese emphasized that recognizing Abbas would signify his dedication to gender justice and inclusive governance through legislative reforms and leadership within Nigeria's National Assembly. Representing Nigeria at the retreat, Agbese highlighted Abbas's persistent efforts in promoting gender-sensitive legislation and the inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in parliamentary processes.

Agbese pointed out that Abbas's legislative track record reflects a strong commitment to fairness, justice, and equal opportunities for all genders. He noted that under Abbas's leadership, Nigeria has emerged as a leading advocate for gender issues across the continent. Agbese stressed that Abbas's work in this field should not go unrecognized, especially at a crucial time.

He described the retreat as a historic opportunity to advance the rights and dignity of women, girls, and vulnerable groups through legislative frameworks. Agbese further mentioned that Abbas's contributions are evident in the numerous gender-focused bills, motions, and debates he has led in the House of Representatives.

Agbese asserted that designating Abbas as Africa's Champion for Gender Equality would not only acknowledge his contributions but also encourage other leaders to prioritize inclusive governance. He stated that under Abbas's leadership, the House has become more attentive to the needs of marginalized groups and has promoted greater participation of women in legislative and oversight functions.

Agbese revealed that the proposal for Abbas's recognition has been submitted to the relevant PAP committee, which is expected to consider and respond to the recommendation soon. He added that endorsing Abbas would strengthen Nigeria's continental leadership in promoting gender equity and signal a broader national commitment to fairness and justice across Africa.

The retreat in Pretoria gathered lawmakers, legal experts, youth leaders, and development partners to focus on reviewing and finalizing a Model Law on Gender Equality and Equity for Africa.
