Aba: The Management of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, has announced the abolition of the issuance of Statement of Result and the sale of handouts. The Rector, Dr. Christopher Okoro, stated that this decision aims to streamline processes and reduce the exploitation of students.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the institution, formerly known as Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, has taken these measures to ensure efficiency and transparency by digitalizing its processes. All results are now required to be uploaded online within six weeks after examinations, eliminating the need for students to approach lecturers directly. Moreover, the polytechnic has outlawed the sale of handouts, ensuring that students are not compelled to purchase textbooks.
Dr. Okoro emphasized that certificates now come with QR codes, allowing employers to verify their authenticity. This move is part of the institution's efforts to enhance academic integrity and reduce unnecessary bureaucracy. Highlighting the inefficiencies of the past, he questioned the rationale behind issuing a Statement of Results, which required students to pay for clearance and certificates separately.
He also revealed that the polytechnic has made significant progress in clearing salary arrears and improving infrastructure. The institution has cleared 36 months of salary arrears accumulated by previous administrations. Furthermore, after being deregistered by the National Board for Technical Education, the polytechnic has regained full accreditation for all its 33 programmes and received approval for 17 new programmes, including Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Mechatronics Engineering, and Fashion Design Technology.
Dr. Okoro expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for his support, praising his forward-thinking leadership. Earlier, Mr. Steve Oko, the new Chairman of the Chapel, commended the rector for transforming the institution and urged him to maintain a harmonious working relationship with the management team and staff. Oko also assured the preparedness of the chapel to promote the activities of the institution through the media.
