TWO TANZANIAN POLITICIANS JAILED FIVE MONTHS EACH FOR USING ABUSIVE LANGUAGE AGAINST PRESIDENT

MBEYA, TANZANIA-- The Mbeya Resident Magistrate's Court in this southwestern Tanzania city has sentenced Mbeya Urban Member of Parliament Joseph Mbilinyi alias Sugu and opposition party Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) Southern Highlands Secretary Emmanuel Masonga to five months' jail each for using abusive language against President John Magufuli.

Delivering the judgment Monday, presiding magistrate Michael Mteite agreed with the Prosecution that the duo should be given deterrent punishment.

Defense counsel Peter Kibatala urged the court to give Sugu and Masonga an alternative sentence but Magistrate Mteite did not rule in their favour.
