DAR-ES-SALAAM, The World Bank (WB) has approved 130 million US dollars as a second additional financing for the Tanzania Strategic Cities Project (TSCP) which is being implemented in seven cities -- Arusha, Dodoma, Tanga, Kigoma, Mwanza, Mtwara and Mbeya -- to help them keep up with the rapid pace of urbanization.
Speaking during the opening of the mid-term review support mission held in Mtwara last week, the Permanent Secretary in the President's Office for Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG), Mussa Iyombe, commended the contribution of the World Bank and government of Denmark towards the successful implementation of the TSCP project.
In his speech read out by the Mtwara Regional Administrative Secretary, Alfred Luanda, Tyombe added that the Bank had agreed to continue supporting component II of the project from July and he urged the participating Local Government Authorities (LGAs) to show their readiness and seriousness to implement the project more successfully. Let us improve our commitment to support implementation of the Component II to make it more successful, Iyombe said.
He also acknowledged the support of the Royal Danish Embassy through Denmark's aid agency, DANIDA, for implementing Component II of the project which deals with institutional strengthening.
He added that during the six years of its implementation, the project had managed to strengthen the LGAs by providing them with tools such as solid waste management equipment and strengthen different systems.
