At least 14 people, including one Chinese national, were trapped after a small gold mine collapsed in Tanzania's northwestern region of Geita on Thursday, local police and the mine's management said.
Mponjoli Mwabulambo, Geita Regional Police Commander, said the accident occurred around 4 a.m. at the Chinese-invested RZT gold mine in Nyarugusu.
Rescue efforts involving the police, fire department and other stakeholders were underway to rescue those trapped inside the mine shaft.
Mwabulambo said a massive mound of earth had collapsed in Nyarugusu village in the northeast of the country, burying the workers.
He said: "A rescue team has been deployed since morning.
"The team hasn't managed to pull out a body."
