The South African Department of Health says it is engaging the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa in an effort to alleviate the current shortage of pharmacists in the country.
Earlier, the society said some newly-qualified pharmacists were unemployed because of a lack of government posts to enable them to complete their year of community service.
Pharmacists in the country cannot work in their preferred sectors until they complete a year of community service, which is a legal requirement.
Department spokesman Joe Maila said Wednesday: We are working very hard with the society to make sure that we get all the pharmacists placed. That's part of our programme. We have already placed all others with some of our partners.
