Last week, the Tanzania-Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA) landed another big deal to haul a total of 18 million litres (18,000 metric tonnes) of petroleum products to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the coming twelve months.
TAZARA Head, Public Relations Mr. Conrad Simuchile said in a statement that as they consolidate their turnaround mission, they are delighted to announce the conclusion of an agreement with African Fossils Limited of Tanzania to move 18 million litres (18,000 metric tonnes) of petroleum products to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the next one year.
"The first consignment of about one million litres (1,000 metric tonnes) has already departed the Port of Dar es Salaam and we are confident that the initial two million litres (2,000 metric tonnes) will be successfully delivered to the DRC within the next one month," he said..
According to him, this import order is particularly key because it fulfills their desire to balance the flow of traffic in both directions of the line as most of the traffic currently moving comprises exports from Zambia and DRC.
The fuel order is the second import consignment to be secured within a month, following the transportation order for 48 million litres (48,000 metric tonnes) of petroleum products destined for Malawi starting July, 2016.
"Our target for this financial year ending 30 June 2017 is 381,000 metric tonnes, a three-fold improvement from 130,000 metric tonnes that we have recently hauled in the just ended 2015/2016 Financial Year," Simuchile added.
Adding that they are grateful to African Fossils Limited for giving them a vote of confidence through this order, which also reaffirms the faith, that their customers have generally placed in them to transform the Authority.
"We believe we are well on course to turnaround TAZARA's performance, which had dropped to the lowest in the Financial Year 2014/2015, when a paltry 87,680 metric tonnes was transported," he said.
To date, TAZARA also fondly known as the "Great Uhuru Railway" because of the role it played in the liberation of many countries in Southern Africa is the greatest symbol of friendship between the nations of China, Tanzania and Zambia.
TAZARA provides a platform for political and socio-economic relationships amongst the three countries, which relationships brought about the existence of the railway line in the first place. From the pre-construction period to date, the relations amongst the three republics have been growing stronger by the day. The peoples of the three countries have since been co-operating in various spheres, with TAZARA being the critical uniting factor in the trilateral co-operation.
The founders of TAZARA had to be friends. Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Dr. Kaunda and Chairman Mao formed a bond that created TAZARA against all odds and their three countries have formed a formidable friendship over the years. The friendship lives on and TAZARA remains the true symbol of that friendship.
